Series Highlights First National Radio Rebroadcast of Super Bowl I
NEW YORK, NY – April 9, 2020 – CUMULUS MEDIA’s Westwood One, the official network radio partner of the NFL, will rerun a series of great games in NFL postseason history to provide sports fans with football programming as all live sports remain on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series will launch Thursday, April 9, and run on subsequent Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00 PM ET. A classic football game will not air on Thursday, April 23, due to the NFL Draft that evening. Westwood One and the NFL will share up-to-the-minute alerts and information about COVID-19 recovery efforts during each of these special NFL post-season broadcasts.
The play-by-play of each game will run as it aired originally, edited down to minimize interruptions. When possible, each game will feature interviews or other comments from some of the players and coaches involved in the contest. Other times, the broadcasts will feature NFL100 content to celebrate the first century of the NFL.
The series will open on April 9 with a replay of the highest-scoring playoff game in NFL history, the 2009 Wild Card game when the Arizona Cardinals beat the Green Bay Packers 51-45 in overtime. All remaining Thursday broadcasts will feature a postseason playoff game from Westwood One’s archives, including the 1992 AFC Wild Card game when the Buffalo Bills overcame a 32-point deficit to defeat the Houston Oilers.
Each Monday night will showcase a different Super Bowl. A series highlight will be the encore presentation of the first Super Bowl, between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, marking the first time the national radio broadcast will be aired in its entirety since the game was played on January 15, 1967. Some of the other Super Bowls to be rebroadcast in this series include Super Bowl XLII, when the New York Giants ruined the New England Patriots’ dream of an undefeated season, and the most recent contest, Super Bowl LIV, won by the Kansas City Chiefs.
