THE CANDIDATES AND THE BAILOUT
The Osgood File. I'm Charles Osgood.
Both presidential candidates supposedly signed off on the financial rescue deal. But neither one sounds crazy about it.
SOT: Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona
"This is something that all of us will swallow hard and go forward with. The option of doing nothing is simply not an acceptable option."
SOT: Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois
"We don't just need a plan for bankers and investors. We need a plan for auto workers, we need a plan for teachers, we need a plan for small business owners."
When it comes to the economic crisis, the candidates may be trying to rise above politics, but what they say is:
SOT: Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona
"Even if this plan works perfectly, there is still enormous economic challenges out there. And so, we don't actually know what is going to be the beneficial results."
SOT: Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois
"My opponent, John McCain, he talks about getting tough on Wall Street. That's what he's been saying for the last few days. But you know what? You can't make up for 26 years in 26 days."
SOT: Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona
"You got to go back to, in my view, fundamentals as to why we got to where we were. Fannie and Freddie. The greed and excess on Wall Street and in Washington."
SOT: Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois
"Senator McCain just doesn't get it. He doesn't understand that the storm hitting Wall Street hit Main Street long ago."
Meanwhile the voters are listening, and some like what Obama says.
SOT: Bob Viering, Bank Manager
"His message of change is one am looking for, because I think much of the mess that we are seeing is a lack of regulation, a lack of oversight, in the mortgage industry in the past several years."
And others?
SOT: Scott LeDoux, County Commissioner
"John McCain has much more experience. McCain has had more time in a Vietnamese prison than Obama has in Congress."
