OF4-10/9/07 9:25AM FOR RETAILERS, IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE CHRISTMAS
The Osgood File. I'm Charles Osgood.
It's still only October and yet for some reason some stores are rushing the holiday season. They're in such a hurry to have us all BUY they're already suggesting that Christmas is NIGH. Not in those exact words but each day more and more they're trying to get people into the store and while you are there broad hints they will drop that it's NEVER too early, too early to shop. And the catalogues fill up the mailbox to say, the H season's coming it's not far away. Which it seems to me is a bit of a leap.
Music: Excerpt of "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas"
The summer has only just recently parted.
But You'll note that some merchants have already started
They're motives of course are for Christmas joy surely
Although these days they do it a tad prematurely
Each year On the streets, and the department store
They start doing it earlier than the year before.
Thanksgiving once started the Holiday Seasons
But the retailers for understandable reasons.
Count among them many a hyper go getter
Took to jumping the gun and the sooner the better.
Too short is the season too soon is it ended.
T'would be better to have the whole season extended.
So on comes the music and on go the lights
And here come the old fashioned wintry sights
Notwithstanding the fact that it's still early fall
And it doesn't feel wintry, no not at all.
If the Christmas creep each year keeps creeping this way
Pretty soon we'll be starting it on Labor Day.
And merchants won't see any good reason why
We shouldn't start Christmas the Fourth of July.
With picnics and fireworks part of the scene
When we say Happy Holiday that's what we'll mean!
